Your Account, Your World: Keep It Safe

Yesterday I participated in a zoom meeting with Brad Oberwager CEO and the Trust & Safety Team. We are all concerned, we can all keep our world safety.

Second Life is more than a platform, it’s a world we’ve helped shape with creativity, community, and trust. Let’s keep together our world safe with these few simple practices to know and to do :

Top account security best practices :

  • Use MFA (multi factor authentification). You can enable MFA on your Second Life account dashboard
  • Use a strong and unique password : Don’t use weak passwords! Your password should be at least 12 characters long, including a mix of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols and never be reused from other websites. Consider using a password manager to generate and store strong, unique passwords. You can change your password here.

*Never share your logging info : Not with friends. Not with family. Not with anyone. Linden Lab employees will never ask for your password. If someone does, report them.

*Don’t buy or sell L$ outside Linden lab :

We continue to see scams where compromised accounts offer “discount L$” through PayPal or Venmo. These L$ are often stolen—and if you’re caught in the middle, you may lose both your money and your account. If you see someone selling L$, especially through direct messages or inworld chat, report it.

*Don’t trust suspicious download links !

Bad actors often share fake viewer downloads in chat or group messages. These links can install malware or steal your login credentials. Always download software directly from : The official Second Life download page or our approved Third-Party Viewer Directory . If a link seems off, it probably is. File an abuse report to protect the community.

*Signs an account may be compromised :

Be cautious if a friend suddenly offers you L$ or asks for real money or if You receive a message urging you to click an unfamiliar link or A Resident shares a download link or file unexpectedly. If it feels strange, trust your instincts and report.

WHAT’S NEW : Linden lab reorganized and grown their Trust & Safety team to better detect, investigate, and respond to abuse and fraud in Second Life. With these changes, we can soon expect : Faster response times to abuse reports, New tools to detect fraudulent behavior and prevent account takeovers, Expanded support coverage to help more Residents more quickly. They are also exploring new layers of account protection in the future – stay tuned !

In case something happens and if your think your account has been compromised, change immediatly your password, enable MFA, and contact Second Life support . Time matters, so do it fast.

Account security is a shared effort. Whether you’re a builder, shopper, club-goer, landowner, or new Resident, your vigilance makes Second Life stronger.
